There are many factors that are considered when it comes to auto insurance premiums. How, where and what kind of car are driven all come into play when insurance must be paid.

A driving record is a determining factor when it comes to auto premiums. The better record you have, the lower that the premium may be. As the years pass, the cost of the premium may decrease too.

Factors included on a driving record include numbers of years driving, convictions associated with driving, accidents, speeding tickets, moving violations and license suspensions.

The reason that there is auto insurance is because of the automobile. The type of car driven can affect auto premiums. Some vehicles have a risky status when it comes to how they fare in accidents and how safe that they are. In addition, some cars have a high theft rate.

Make and model matter as does replacing the vehicle if it is ever damaged. Knowledge is power and in this case, knowledge is money. The Canadian Loss Experience Rating (CLEAR) shows how much each car will cost to replace. The newer the model means the more out of pocket. The IBC (Insurance Bureau of Canada) website can show history of cars and the top cars stolen in Canada so you can know everything before you pay.

Insurance premiums are based on more than what you drive and how clean your driving record is. The amount of time that you spend on the road is also a factor in how much the premium will be. If a driver spends a lot of time on the road, then their premium will be higher. It is just that simple. Insurance companies also look at all of the drivers that will be driving a particular car and their driving records too.

If you live in an area with high vandalism and theft, then the cost of an insurance premium can be quite high. In Canada, the provinces have categories that put insurance holders together according to their profiles.

When coverage is chosen that can make the cost high or low. If more coverage is chosen, then the more it will cost. In addition, a low deductible carries a higher premium cost. Each province may carry its own minimal amount of coverage to live there so check that before committing to a plan.

There are some factors that do not really include anything to do with a driver. Inflation can cause premiums to increase and the government can raise them as well.

When you are ready to file an insurance claim, you must be sure it is filed properly in order for everything to go smoothly. One thing to remember is that not all accident need an insurance file claim filed.

When an accident occurs and those in the accident were injured the police should be called, as well as provincial limits such as the $1,000 limit in Ontario.

When an accident does occur, the vehicles should be moved out of the flow of traffic to ensure more damage is not done to any of the vehicles. All individuals involved in the accident should share information regarding their insurance companies along with other details such as vehicle identification, names of all those involved in the accident, the badge numbers of the police officers, and the names of any emergency technicians. If possible, take pictures.

Police officers will have a driver information exchange form, which can be given upon request. This will ensure that all the pertinent information is exchanged. If there were witnesses, it is important to also write down their names and addresses.

All drivers in an accident will need to contact their insurance companies to file a claim. You should contact your insurance company as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more difficult it may be to gather the information. You must remember to disclose all information as it can cause more problems later when other information is discovered.

Of course, you will need to get your vehicle repaired. Do not have your vehicle fixed unless you are given the go ahead from your insurance company that they will pay for the repairs. Once the repairs are finished, be sure they are fixed before you leave, and then check again, when you get home. There may be other problems discovered later or during the time, the vehicle is being repaired. Be sure that your insurance company will pay for these as well.

Your insurance company should be able to help you find repair shops in your area. It is truly easier for you to take your vehicle to a company that the insurance company has used in the past.

Now that is the ideal insurance question. Finding better insurance deals sometimes comes at a time when the expiration date of the current plan is months away. What to do?

Finding out that the current policy is costing more than it could be somewhere else raises many questions. Insurance companies can charge a cancellation fee when a switch to another company occurs. The savings may be worth it, but looking at what the costs to cancel would be including the policy price and how long the policy holder has been with the company.

Switching can cost money, but may be beneficial in the long run. The question ends up being to switch or not to switch? There are things to consider before making the big decision and steps to take.

Contacting the insurance company and acquiring the information on cancellation costs is the first step. The policy premium then needs to be divided by 12 or the monthly payment can be used. The number then needs to be multiplied by the months remaining in the plan. This number will be used later.

A new insurance company can be contacted and the premium can be divided by 12 and multiplied just like the above policy. Now subtract the current policy rate from the new company’s rate. The cancellation rate may be lower than the savings and that means that a switch needs to occur. If the savings are lower then forget about it.

Never cancel the current insurance until a replacement is done and the switch is final. This prevents any lapses in coverage.
